One of Hip Hop’s greatest duos, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, are back again with “Revolutions Per Minute.” I was wondering when we would get a follow up to “Train of Thought.” It’s been about 10 years since the duo has released an album as Reflection Eternal. Over those years they have collaborated on a number tracks, but this long awaited album is finally here. When I first heard the track “Back Again” featuring RES, I was blown away. The beat is signature Hi-Tek, which is a mix mellow jazzy horns and fast drums. Talib, as usual, comes hard with his flow saying “That’s right we back again, you can like rap again.” With a line like that I could only expect the other tracks to come correct as well. Another strong track on the album is “Midnight Hour” featuring Estelle. This track’s beat, in my opinion, is Hi-Tek’s version of Motown with Estelle’s voice resembling a young Diana Ross from the Supremes. With these two tracks mainstream hip hop listeners will definitely pick this album up. On the other hand, there are tracks on here that serve well for all the die hard Hip Hop heads. “Just Begun” features Mos Def, counterpart to Talib in the dynamic duo Black Star, as well as rising star Jay Electronica. In this track all three MC’s seem to feed off each others’ rhymes and just completely kill it. Not only are the lyrics dope, but Hi-Tek’s beat sampled from a classic Carpenter’s track is just crazy. With Revolutions Per Minute released today, this is a definite pickup for any fan of Hip Hop on any level, beginner to Guru. Below are links to the tracks on youtube. Keep it fresh.
