I Am Love

Io sono l’amore is a 2010 Italian film directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Tilda Swinton who shows off her Italian language skills playing a Russian-born housewife and mother who married young into the very wealthy Milanese-born Recchi family.

Like any other wealthy woman who has everything she can materialistically want and can have, is bored and finds herself taking a lover, Anotnio. A chef who is her son’s best friend. *Gasp*

This perfect family obviously has it’s share of imperfections. Very reminiscent of a Monet painting in which it is beautiful and pristine from afar, but a mess when given a chance to look closer and delve deeper beyond the surface. In a nutshell: Emma has an affair, symbolically liberates herself from her former world by cutting off her hair, her daughter Elisabetta is a lesbian, her favorite son Edo dies, her marriage collapses, and there’s an unborn child without a father! I don’t know how much more melodramatic it can get with this storyline.  It definitely packs a punch. Add on the opera-esque soundtrack, beautifully shot scenes, aesthetically pleasing wardrobe, villa, and Italian countryside and this is definitely a must see.

The beautiful thing I found about this film was the cinematography and the emotions it emitted. Although it was subtitled, I didn’t feel the dialogue was a great contribution to its initial impression. I had an emotional reaction and felt a deep connection for this woman. In the beginning, Swinton’s character “Emma” is this graceful, statuesque beauty who was an almost too perfect version of a Stepford wife. I would even dare to say it was almost a snoozefest but retracted myself from pressing the stop button. And I am glad I didn’t! It was as dramatic as a soap opera, that I wanted more of the Recchi family even after the ending. And I am sure you will feel the same way.
